Academic vs. General Training

There are two types of IELTS tests. Choose the one that suits your goals.
IELTS Academic
For higher education and professional registration.

Take this test if you want to study at either undergraduate or postgraduate level anywhere in the world, or if you want to work in a professional organization in an English speaking country.

Suitable for:

  • University admissions
  • Professional registration (doctors, nurses, etc.)
IELTS General Training
For migration or secondary education.

Take this test to study at below degree level, work or undertake work-related training in an English speaking country, or for emigration to Australia, Canada, New Zealand and the UK.

Suitable for:

  • Migration (visa purposes)
  • Secondary education/training
  • Work experience
Format

The Four Components

The IELTS test consists of four parts. Listening, Reading, and Writing are completed on the same day, while Speaking may be on the same day or up to 7 days before or after.
Listening Section
30 Minutes (+10 minutes transfer time for paper-based)

Format

4 recordings of native English speakers (monologues and conversations).

Questions

40 questions total (10 per section).
